Does commercial solar maintenance affect panel and inverter warranties?

Most commercial solar panel and inverter warranties require documented maintenance according to manufacturer specifications — failure to conduct and record annual inspections can be cited when denying warranty claims, while maintaining complete inspection records strengthens claims when faults occur.

Clear answer, explained.

Commercial solar warranties are divided into two types: a product defect warranty (typically 10–12 years covering manufacturing defects) and a linear power warranty (typically 25 years guaranteeing minimum output). Inverter warranties are typically 5–12 years on the product. Both types of warranty have conditions that, if not met, can affect the manufacturer's obligation to cover repair or replacement.

Annual inspection and documented maintenance records are the most important warranty preservation activities for commercial system owners. Warranty claims based on premature degradation or product failure are significantly stronger when the system owner can demonstrate that regular inspections were conducted, faults were reported promptly, and the system was operated according to manufacturer specifications. Claims without maintenance records face higher scrutiny and in some cases are denied on the basis that inadequate maintenance may have contributed to the fault.

Warranty periods also govern the timing of thermographic inspection planning. Module faults identified through thermographic inspection within the product defect warranty period can be replaced at manufacturer cost — typically covering labour and materials. Thermographic surveys conducted regularly throughout the warranty period maximise the likelihood of identifying warranty-eligible faults before coverage expires.

Key points

What this means in practice.

  • Annual inspection records are essential warranty documentation
  • Undocumented maintenance weakens manufacturer warranty claims
  • Product defect warranty: 10–12 years; linear power warranty: 25 years
  • Inverter warranty: 5–12 years depending on manufacturer
  • Thermographic inspection within warranty period maximises claim value
  • Operating per manufacturer specifications is a warranty condition

When this applies

Best-fit environments.

  • Systems approaching or within warranty claim windows
  • Commercial installations where warranty documentation has not been maintained
  • Facilities with aging panels or inverters that may qualify for warranty replacement
  • Property acquisitions including solar where warranty history needs audit
