What is the difference between Level 1, Level 2, and DC fast charging for commercial use?

Level 1 uses standard 120V outlets and is too slow for most commercial use; Level 2 uses 240V and delivers 25–50 km of range per hour, making it the commercial standard; DC fast charging uses high-voltage direct current for rapid turnaround in 20–60 minutes.

Clear answer

Clear answer, explained.

Commercial EV charging is classified by charging speed and electrical demand. The right level depends on how long vehicles are parked and how quickly they need to be ready for the next use.

Level 1 charging uses a standard 120V outlet and delivers approximately 8 km of range per hour. It is adequate for light-duty vehicles parked overnight at a home or low-use facility, but impractical for most commercial applications where vehicles return with a partial charge and need rapid turnaround. Level 2 charging uses 240V power and delivers 25–50 km of range per hour — it is the standard for commercial workplaces, parking facilities, and fleet depots where vehicles charge over several hours. Most employee and visitor parking EV applications use Level 2.

DC fast charging (Level 3) uses high-voltage direct current to deliver 100–300+ km of range in 20–60 minutes. It is appropriate for high-turnover fleet operations, transit hubs, or retail locations where vehicles cannot be parked for extended charging. DC fast chargers require significantly more electrical infrastructure and cost more to install and operate. Most commercial EV programmes combine Level 2 as the primary option with DC fast chargers for specific high-priority applications.

Key points

What this means in practice.

  • Level 1 (120V): ~8 km/hr, light use only
  • Level 2 (240V): 25–50 km/hr, commercial standard
  • DC fast (Level 3): 100–300+ km in 20–60 min
  • Level 2 is appropriate for most fleet and workplace use
  • DC fast charging requires major electrical infrastructure
  • Most commercial programmes combine Level 2 + DC fast

When this applies

Best-fit environments.

  • Workplace and employee parking facilities
  • Fleet depots with overnight or shift-based charging
  • Retail or hospitality sites needing rapid turnaround
  • Multi-tenant properties adding EV as an amenity
